6 Quick Changes You Can Make To Give Your New Build Home A Hand This Winter

As we gear up for the chilly months ahead, it's time to give our homes a little TLC, especially with rising energy costs and the general increase in the cost of living. If you've recently moved into a shiny, new-build home, we've got some extra tips to help you cozy up your space and save some energy.

1. Get Cozy with Heating Controls

To stay toasty without breaking the bank, set your heating to kick in when you really need it. Room thermometers and individual radiator thermometers are your friends here. Aim for that sweet spot between 18-20oC. Cranking it up too high might lead to tiny plaster cracks and higher heating bills.

2. Put Your Home Furnishings to Work

Your curtains and blinds are more than just window dressing! Close them up in the evenings to trap that precious heat. Consider adding some rugs to hard floors for an extra layer of warmth. And don't let your furniture hog all the warmth – make sure it's not blocking your radiators.

3. Insulate and Ventilate

New-build homes are usually top-notch in the insulation department. Still, you can beef up coziness by adding draft excluders to keyholes and letterboxes. But here's the thing: while keeping the warmth in is essential, so is letting your home breathe. Crack open those vents in your double-glazed windows and doors for some fresh air, and don't forget to put your kitchen and bathroom extractor fans to good use to fend off condensation.

4. Be Kind to Your Pipes

When you're planning a getaway, it might be tempting to switch off the heating and hot water entirely. But here's a smarter move: set them to come on at a low 10 degrees. This way, you'll avoid those nasty surprises of frozen or burst pipes if the temperature takes a nosedive while you're sipping hot cocoa elsewhere.

5. Gutter Checkup

Even new homes need a little TLC from time to time. Keep those gutters clear of leaves and debris to ensure they're doing their job. This simple task will help prevent any unwanted water intrusions.

6. Wind-Proof Your Outdoor Gear

When the weather forecast predicts gusty winds, take a moment to secure any lightweight outdoor furniture, plant pots, or other loose items that could become projectiles. Nobody wants a flying garden gnome!

So there you have it, folks! Six friendly tips to help you and your new-build home weather the cold months ahead. Stay warm, stay cozy, and enjoy the comfort of your lovely home! 🍂🏡❄️
